As a window covering specialist we feel it is our responsibility to educate our clients, friends and family on child safety when it comes to window treatments.  We at WindowWearz by Grace Your Space Interiors want to send out the word that October is “Child Safety Month”. We have all heard about the dangers that lift cords on blinds and shades pose. However, I think there are a lot of us that have not considered that the lift cords on the back of fabric shades represent just as big a danger. I recently received an email which included this very alarming video. (If the link does not open the video, type "roman shade" in the search dialog box.) The video contains interviews with parents of children injured by roman shades. If only the parents had been warned about the dangers of lift cords and advised NOT TO INSTALL any shade with a cord in a child's room.

  . . . Dangerous Back Lift Cords . . .

Window coverings with cords can be a strangulation hazard to small children. Since 1990 more than 200 infants and young children have died from accidental strangulation by window cords. Visit the WCSC website and get educated, don't wait until your window treatment is starring on a video!
Install only cordless window coverings in young children's bedrooms and play areas. Replace window blinds, corded shades and draperies manufactured before 2001 with today's safer products.
Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.
Keep all window pull cords and inner lift cords out of the reach of children.  Make sure that tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall.  Make sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords.
Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a windowsill.
There are so many window coverings options available that allow you to have beautiful window treatments without the hidden dangers.
Call today for your free retrofit kits and a consumer brochure with more details on the hidden dangers of window treatment cords.
